A particularly important distinction is between shared<br clear='none'\/>\nknowledge (common<br clear='none'\/>\nground) and private knowledge (privileged ground). Keeping track of<br clear='none'\/>\nwhat is shared and<br clear='none'\/>\nwhat is privileged would seem, however, to be too computationally<br clear='none'\/>\nexpensive and too<br clear='none'\/>\nmemory intensive to inform real-time language processing—a position<br clear='none'\/>\nsupported by<br clear='none'\/>\nstriking experimental evidence that speakers and listeners act<br clear='none'\/>\negocentrically, showing<br clear='none'\/>\nstrong and seemingly inappropriate intrusions from their own privileged<br clear='none'\/>\nground. I’ll<br clear='none'\/>\nreview recent results from my laboratory demonstrating that (a)<br clear='none'\/>\nspeaker’s utterances<br clear='none'\/>\nprovide evidence about whether they believe information is shared or<br clear='none'\/>\nprivileged and (b)<br clear='none'\/>\nlisteners are extremely sensitive to this evidence.
