{"id":1570,"date":"2010-05-03T05:00:59","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T09:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whamit.mit.edu\/?p=1570"},"modified":"2010-05-02T11:26:59","modified_gmt":"2010-05-02T15:26:59","slug":"mit-ling-colloquium-57-danny-fox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ling-phil.mit.edu\/whamit\/2010\/05\/03\/mit-ling-colloquium-57-danny-fox\/","title":{"rendered":"MIT Ling Colloquium 5\/7: Danny Fox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Speaker: Danny Fox (MIT)<BR><br clear='none'\/>\nTime: Friday, May 7, 2010, 3:30pm-5pm<BR><br clear='none'\/>\nLocation: 32-141 (Stata Center)<BR><br clear='none'\/>\nTitle: Negative Islands and Maximization Failure<\/P><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<P><br clear='none'\/>\nThe goal of this talk is to discuss various questions that arise in the context of attempts to reduce<br clear='none'\/>\na class of weak islands to Maximization Failure (Fox and Hackl 2006, Fox 2007, Abrusan 2007,<br clear='none'\/>\nin press, Nouwen 2008, Abrusan and Spector 2008, in press, Shimoyama and Schwarz 2010).<br clear='none'\/>\nThe basic idea that guides these attempts is that the the relevant islands arise from a maximality<br clear='none'\/>\nrequirement that cannot be met on semantic\/logical grounds.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The questions we will discuss pertain to the possible sources of this Maximization Failure (MF).<br clear='none'\/>\nAccording to Fox and Hackl, the source in certain degree constructions is the density of degree<br clear='none'\/>\ndomains.
