Experimental and Computational Methods in Linguistics – new meeting group (ECML)

A new meeting group for people in the department who are engaged in experimental or computational work, or who are interested in learning more about these approaches: the (provisionally named) Experimental & Computational Methods in Linguistics group, or ECML!

The meetings will be largely informal and fairly unstructured, with more formal presentations or talks being the exception rather than the rule. The idea is to have a space for the kind of discussion that doesn’t fit neatly into a class or reading group — things like working through a methodological problem in an ongoing project, talking through statistical analyses or experimental design choices, or floating project ideas that are still at an early stage.

A broader aim is to build more of a shared and supportive culture around experimental and computational methodology across the department. We hope this will be useful to everyone, including incoming first-year students, who may find it a natural entry point for getting acquainted with the kind of work people here are doing.

ECML meets Wednesdays 2–3pm in room 32-461. The first meeting will be on September 23  — we’ll use that session mainly to talk about what people want out of the group and how to structure it going forward.

We’ll set up a mailing list shortly. In the meantime, feel free to reach out with any questions.

Hope to see you there,

Adam, Amy, Edward, Martin and Shota
